Daniel was hearing from Gabriel the future of their coming Messiah. The very one they were looking forward to, and it was grim. To hear that your Messiah, the one who was to come and save the world will die a horrible death had to be shocking for Daniel.
Daniel took the time to understand what God expected of his people, he also took the time to understand where the Israelites went wrong, where their sin fell. He was able to do this because he spent time studying the word of God.
Daniel just experienced the heavy weight and burden of seeing this vision, he was left feeling confused and didn’t understand everything that was going on, so God commanded his angel Gabriel to “make him understand”.
